In this episode, we perceive an intriguing discussion on intentions, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Puranaanooru 134, penned about the Velir King Aay Andiran by the poet Uraiyoor Enicheri Mudamosiyaar. The verse is situated in the category of ‘Paadaan Thinai’ or ‘King’s praise’ and informs us about the ethical source of this king’s generosity.
‘இம்மைச் செய்தது மறுமைக்கு ஆம்’ எனும்
அற விலை வணிகன் ஆஅய் அல்லன்;
பிறரும் சான்றோர் சென்ற நெறி என,
ஆங்குப் பட்டன்று, அவன் கைவண்மையே.
A tiny song delving into a deep thought. The poet’s words can be translated as follows:
“Aay is not a tradesman of virtues who thinks, ‘What I do now will gain me a better afterlife’. Only because he sees that this is the right path taken by the wise before him, he follows in their footsteps with his immense charity.”
Time to take a closer look at the words herein. The poet declares that Aay does not think that he should be generous in this life because this is going to serve him after his death. He is not such a trader who wishes to buy a peaceful afterlife with the price of his generosity in this life. In actuality, King Aay looks at how the great and wise before him have lived their lives and has decided this is the right thing to do and that is the only basis for his boundless generosity, the poet concludes.
This verse seems to be in response to the questions of others, who could have wondered, ‘Why does this king give so much? Over and beyond what he can and should? What hidden stake does he have in this?’. As if reading the heart and mind of the king, the poet says with conviction, it’s not a trade that Aay is performing but an unconditional generosity, based on his belief that this is the right thing to do in life, inspired by those before him. The poet seems to be saying it’s not for the future but because of the past. A subtle thought in this ancient verse that has a timeless relevance is that an act of charity done today should be bereft of any expectations of benefit any day tomorrow!
