In this episode, we perceive an ironic situation, as portrayed in Sangam Literary work, Puranaanooru 111, penned about the Velir King Vel Paari by the poet Kabilar. Set in the category of ‘Nochchi Thinai’ or ‘King’s defence from within’, the verse talks about who can attain the peak of Parambu with ease.
அளிதோ தானே, பேர் இருங் குன்றே!
வேலின் வேறல் வேந்தர்க்கோ அரிதே;
நீலத்து இணை மலர் புரையும் உண்கண்
கிணை மகட்கு எளிதால், பாடினள் வரினே.
A short verse detailing a surprising fact about the king’s land. The poet’s words can be translated as follows:
“It is astonishing – the fate of this great and dark peak! It’s hard for kings to attain with the strength of their spears, but so easy for a drummer maiden, with kohl-streaked eyes akin to blue lotus flowers, when she comes singing!”
Time to take another glance at the thought herein. The poet turns and looks at the huge peak of Parambu and is amazed by the fact how it can never be conquered by the spears of kings but how easily it can be won over by a drum that is played on, by a woman singer!
In one shot, the poet showcases both the strength as well as the generosity of the king. Strength showcased in the fact that no one can conquer an inch of the king’s land by force and generosity in that he would give away everything for the sake of art and those who come seeking his compassion. A verse that highlights a curious case wherein a musical instrument triumphs over a weapon of war in the mission of conquering!
